Winnipeg and Region Green Map

Manitoba Eco-Network | University of Manitoba

Welcome!

This website is designed to provide access to the results of two Green Map Projects. The one is for Winnipeg and Region, the other is a focus area for Winnipeg’s Spence Neighbourhood - a pilot project for a more community-based mapping process which will eventually be applied to other neighbourhoods. Both projects are briefly described in the following. At this date, the results of the Spence Neighbourhood and City of Winnipeg Green Map Projects are fully accessible under the menu options "Maps" and "List of Places". Please note that all maps and other content on this site are works in progress: we welcome suggestions and nominations to make the contents relevant to the community. The following provides more information on the project and its goals. To find out how to use this site, please click on “How to Use this Site”.

It's easy to get involved and contribute to the Green Map. Head over to the suggestions page (under Get Involved on the menu) and recommend a new location on the map. We need your input!

Winnipeg and Region Green Map

Winnipeg and Region Green Map - Goals

Within Winnipeg and its surrounding region, there is a wealth of green resources.  The Manitoba Eco-Network and the University of Manitoba Department of City Planning have partnered to create this website and interactive Green Map to promote the environmental infrastructure and related social economy1 projects in and around Winnipeg. Overall, the project has three goals:

(1) Create a user-friendly directory so people can find out about and access existing environmental and related social/economic facilities, organizations, and services;

(2) Educate the public about environmentally friendly choices in their daily lives; and

(3) Create an opportunity for the environmental community to display and communicate priority areas of concern and success.

To achieve these goals, the website provides a Winnipeg List of Green Places and a Winnipeg Green Map. The List of Places provides the option to search for information by topic - the map provides the option to search by geographical area. For information on how to use and access the maps and directories, click on About this Project at the top of the page and then choose How to Use this Site.

History of the Winnipeg and Region Green Map

The List of Green Places and a first Green Map were established by David vanVliet and his students at the University of Manitoba, Department of City Planning. In 2007, when a partnership with the Manitoba Eco-Network had been established, this list of places included approximately 200 places with descriptions and contact information. (To find out more about Green Map critera, click on “About this Project” at the top of the page and then on “Criteria” on the drop-down menu.)

The Manitoba Eco-Network, an umbrella organization for environmental organizations in Manitoba, that also has GIS capacities, used the information that had already been collected to publish and develop the Green Map and the List of Places included on this website. The Manitoba Eco-Network is also the agency that collects new suggestions and nominations. The submitted information will be discussed with David vanVliet before being added to the published Green Map

The Winnipeg and Region database is currently being extended based on feedback from individuals and organizations, as well as that from Manitoba Eco-Network member groups - which were approached regarding this project and asked for suggestions and nominations. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and we are impressed by the number of organizations and institutions who are willing to share their documented information and data to increase their outreach through this community tool. The submitted information is being added incrementally and will eventually make up a considerable portion of the information included on the Green Map. We wish to thank all of those who are willing to become involved.

Spence Neighbourhood Green Map Pilot

Spence Neighbourhood Green Map Pilot - Goals

To improve relevance of the Winnipeg and Region Green Map to the community, a pilot project for interactive community mapping was started in Winnipeg’s Spence Neighbourhood. This pilot project is designed around an interactive community mapping project in partnership with Spence Neighborhood Association (SNA) and has the following goals:

(1) Define environmental infrastructures, CED projects, social economic enterprises, and other elements in the Spence Neighbourhood to be included on the community Green Map

(2) Compile information on historic and existing resources (e.g., the neighbourhood’s “Historic Walking Tour”, green spaces, gardens, CED projects, etc. (see information in Appendix A)) for inclusion on the Green Map.

(3) Implement a community mapping project, conduct community consultations, map potential green spaces and housing development sites, and establish a “Green Spaces Walking Tour” map

(4) Use the established map as a discussion and planning tool within the neighbourhood and with the City of Winnipeg. These maps will promote a better understanding of the diverse community and activities in the Spence neighbourhood.

So far, over 70 places have been suggested during various community gatherings and through our “interactive” wall-size map at the Spence Neighbourhood Association office at 615 Ellice Avenue and at 430 Langside the Magnus Eliaison Recreation Centre. For more information on the nomination process, click on Get Involved, then choose Suggestions.

First results from the community mapping effort can be viewed under Maps at the top of the page: choose Spence Neighbourhood. Or check out the list under List of Places and follow the Spence Neighbourhood link.
